Speri Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Vigneto Monte Sant'Urbano 2016
Amarone, or Amarome della Valpocliace (as it’s officially known), earned DOCG status (Italy’s top wine appellation) in 2009. It’s made by drying the grapes, concentrating the sugar, and while the resulting wine is fermented to dryness, the illusion of sweetness remains. An amazing 40% of the grapes’ weight is lost during drying and this, coupled with the incredibly labour intensive nature of the process, explains why Amarone is also expensive. Considering what you’re getting though, I’d argue it’s still possible to find good value.
Speri is one of the best producers in the region and 2016 was one of the best vintages. This is a beautiful wine.
"The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant’Urbano takes some time to blossom in the glass, as mineral-tinged blackberry evolves into a display of currants and cherries complemented by hints of sweet mint, lavender and violets. It’s velvety in texture and savory to the core, coasting dark red and black fruits across a medium-bodied frame, contrasted by vibrant acids, as grippy tannins form up toward the close. This finishes youthfully structured yet amazingly long, with echoes of licorice and purple inner florals. The 2016 is geared for the cellar, and in need of some time to soften, but my expectations are very high." 95 points, Eric Guido, Vinous 95 Points.

And if you really want to push the boat out…
One of my favourite producers, Chateau Figeac is one of the largest wine estates in Saint Emilion on Bordeaux’s right bank. Located on soils comprising mostly of gravel, unlike other right bank producers, the wines of Chateau Figeac are cabernet sauvignon dominant. The history of this estate dates to the 2nd century, with the remains of a Roman villa still present on the property. Before the French revolution Figeac was owned by the well-known Vital Carles family and at one point the estate spanned over 200ha. During the 19th century it was broken up, the reason why so many surrounding estates bear the name Figeac. The Figeac vineyard is a single parcel with three gravelly outcrops that run from north to south. Grapes are usually harvested late due to the majority being cabernet, before being sorted fastidiously and fermented using natural yeasts in wooden vats. The wines are then aged in entirely new oak for 15 to 18 months. The estate was rated as Grand Cru Classé (B) in the original St Emilion Classification of 1955 and in 2022 was elevated to Grand Cru Classé (A), the highest ranking.
The wine was purchased en-primeur and has been stored in a temperature-controlled cabinet since arrival in Sydney.
