Chateau Lafite Rothschild History

Chateau Lafite Rothschild is located in the appellation of Pauillac on the left (western) bank of the Gironde Estuary. Lafite was one of the original four first growths identified in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, the other three being Margaux, Latour and Haut-Brion. (Mouton was elevated in 1973). Many regard Lafite as the first of the First Growths and its price reflects this.

Vineyards have been on the site for several centuries, but the estate had come to prominence for the quality of its wines by the 17th century. The wine has had many famous devotees, including notably Thomas Jefferson, who visited Bordeaux in May 1787, whilst serving as ambassador for the young United States Republic.

Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Chateau Lafite in 1868, changing the name to Chateau Lafite Rothschild. It has remained in the family’s hands since, except for a period when it was occupied and heavily plundered by the Germans during WWII.

The estate comprises 116ha, all of which is red (70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot). Jane Anson MW, describes in Decanter Magazine, the wines of Château Lafite Rothschild as “complex, elegant and extremely long-living”.
