Domaine du Clos de Tart La Forge de Tart 2020
Clos de Tart is a Grand Cru monopole (ie one owner) located in the village of Morey-St-Denis in Burgundy. The 7.5ha walled vineyard was founded by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey in 1141, who held it until the French Revolution when it was sold to the Marey-Monge family. In 1932 it was acquired by Macon wine merchant Henri Mommessin who sold it to the Pinault family in 2018. Since his appointment as winemaker in the mid 90s, Sylvain Pitiot has brought significant improvements to the estate.
La Forge de Tart is produced from younger vines (20 years old) from within the Clos de Tart Grand Cru, but classified as Morey-St-Denis Premier Cru.
This wine was purchased direct from the importer on release and has been stored in temp controlled conditions since that time.
"A more elegant and more complex nose features plenty of floral elements, and in particular violet and lilac, to the fresher aromas of dark berries and sandalwood. There is excellent energy and fine detail to the more concentrated medium weight plus flavors that conclude in a firm, serious and robust finish; indeed this is notably powerful. One to consider. *Outstanding*" (1/2022)

"The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, red cherries, wild berries, exotic spices and peonies, framed by a discreet touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, it's vibrant and concentrated, with powdery tannins and a more serious, reserved profile than the domaine's Morey-Saint-Denis. Alessandro Noli's second vintage at the Domaine du Clos de Tart is another notable success, as the accompanying notes attest. As I wrote last year, changes effected by Noli at this address include much gentler handling of the grapes during cuvaison—just occasional "foulage," as Noli puts it, by foot—and diminished percentages of new oak: 70% for the Tart herself and 50% for the Forge. Some concrete eggs, it seems, now keep the fûts company in the cellar." (WK) (1/2022)

"The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has quite a high-toned and overtly floral bouquet, the 20% whole bunch neatly disguised. There is a touch of mint that emerges with time. The palate is very harmonious, silky smooth tannins, the 50% new oak seamlessly integrated. This is a clear level up from the Village Cru and feels caressing and sensual towards the finish. Excellent, but it deserves 5-7 years in bottle." (NM) (12/2021)
