Terre a Terre Crayeres Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2021
This wine is fast becoming regarded as one of Australia's best sauvignon blancs. Every year it seems to receive praise, and this vintge is no exception, with the 2021 being rated as the Top rated Sauvignon Blanc in James Halliday's Wine Companion 2023.
"Hand-picked fruit from the Crayeres vineyard, whole-bunch pressed, cold settled in stainless steel for 3 weeks, fermented in large-format French oak. Matured on full lees with no bâtonnage. Settled for a month in tank prior to bottling. This is a marvel. It has all of the sophistication and line of the Down to Earth Sauvignon Blanc, but it works within a startlingly streamlined framework of phenolics. This is slippery and supple in texture, with rivulets of flavour that ripple and course through the mouth long after the wine has left. We are lucky to have the quality of sauvignon blanc that we do here in Australia and this is one of the very best. An amazing display of class."

“Pale colour. Intense grapefruit, lemon curd aromas with herb garden/ verbena notes. Supple and expressive wine with grapefruit, lemon curd, roasted almond flavours, fine loose knit chalky textures, lovely mid-palate richness and fresh long crisp acidity. A very sophisticated wine with beautiful fruit complexity, volume and zest. This exceptional wine was vinified and matured in eight seasoned 600L French Demi Muids. After eight months aging on yeast lees, the wine was racked and cold settled. Drink now – 2028 but best early. 12.8% alc.”

A bit more info about Wrattonbully and Terre a Terre.
Wrattonbully’s a great region that few have heard of - amazing given it directly joins Coonawarra’s northeastern boundary. It shares a similar climate to Coonawarra (and Bordeaux), as well as the same prized terra rossa soil over limestone, although the limestone in Wrattonbully is much older than in Coonawarra. In fact, the limestone caves that sit below Wrattonbully are part of the Naracoorte Caves National park, South Australia’s only World Heritage site.
Brian Croser acquired the Koppamurra Vineyard, one of the original two, in 2002, renaming it the Whalebone Vineyard, after the bones of a massive whale were found beneath it. Lucy Croser and Xavier Bizot bought a site next door to this in 2004, calling it the Crayères Vineyard, literally translating to ‘chalk pit’, Xavier tells me it’s also a local Champagne term for the network of cellars carved into the limestone there. Conditions here are very similar to St Emilion in Bordeaux. In 2008 they planted cabernet, shiraz, cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc. The vineyard is not certified organic but is managed with minimal use of chemicals.
