Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2021
I tried this wine with winemaker Sarah Crowe in April '24 and absolutely loved it. Why don't more drinkers appreciate just how good Yarra shiraz can be... especially this one! Lean, elegant, spicy and smooth, yet offering so much complexity and power.
I’m a big fan of the wines of Yarra Yering, especially since Sarah began weaving her magic as winemaker in 2013. Sarah was recognised for her excellence when she became the first woman to win the prestigious James Halliday Winemaker of the Year award in 2017.
Sarah and Yarra Yering went on to be awarded:
Winemaker of the Year in 2021, by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine
Winery of the Year 2021 by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review
James Halliday Winery of the Year 2022 and in the same year Wine of the Year, the first time a winery has ever won the 2 major accolades in the one year
And most recenlty, Winery of the Year 2024 (again) by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review.
Incredbile!
“Yarra Yering wines have always been very good, but under the current management, they have hit new heights. Sarah Crowe is an outstanding winemaker…. Without any fanfare (she) puts out a bevy of fabulous wines year after year.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, June 2019.
"Perfumed cool climate Shiraz; deliciously medium bodied with a lick of aniseed spice. Vibrant blue and black plum fruits bring a fresh energy to the palate along with some liquorice spice layering in structure and complexity. As always from this block we see some cured meat and a smoke-char interest driving the back palate. Medium weighted and driven by fruit purity, oak just a faint background seasoning and a bite of stalk grip interest."
Winemaker's notes.
"Sourced from a single block planted in 1973. Fermented with a combination of whole bunches and whole berries. Half the wine was fermented and matured in a 3500L French foudre (purchased in 2019), the other half in French puncheons (10% new). A medium–deep and very bright crimson. Lifted and immediately appealing with its aromas of black raspberries and violets alongside a cornucopia of spices including cracked black pepper, anise and fennel seeds. A gorgeous medium-weighted, intensely flavoured and long Yarra Valley shiraz with enough tannin to suggest patience will be rewarded. Great stuff."
98 points, Philip Rich, James Halliday Wine Companion.
